How it is calculated

First, what it costs to keep the salon open is spread over the hours you work, then the product is added, and last the margin is set on the price.

  1. Cost per hour = fixed costs ÷ bookable hours.
  2. Service cost = cost per hour × duration in hours + product cost.
  3. Price = service cost ÷ (1 − margin).

A worked example

Your hour costs US$ 50.00. A 45-minute service costs you US$ 56.00, and to make a 30% margin you charge US$ 80.00: US$ 24.00 of profit.

With a 30% margin, 30% of the price is profit. That is why you divide by 0.7 instead of multiplying by 1.3: multiplying gives a smaller margin than the one you want.
